🎨 Balayage (The Art of Sweeping)
Balayage (pronounced bah-lee-ahge) is a French term meaning "to sweep" or "to paint."
-
Technique: The lightener is hand-painted directly onto the hair in a sweeping, freehand motion. Foils are typically not used.
-
Color Placement: The color is applied most heavily on the mid-lengths and ends, becoming softer and diffused closer to the root.
-
Result: This creates a natural, sun-kissed, multi-tonal look with a soft, seamless gradient. It is designed to mimic where the sun would naturally lighten your hair.
-
Maintenance: It is famously low-maintenance. Because the color is softest near the root, there are no harsh lines of demarcation as the hair grows out, allowing for longer periods between appointments (often 3-6 months for a full refresh).
🪙 Traditional Highlights (The Art of Precision)
Traditional highlighting uses the classic method of foiling to achieve consistent, saturated color from root to tip.
-
Technique: Hair strands are precisely separated (either sliced or weaved) and isolated by being fully wrapped in aluminum foils after the lightener is applied.
-
Color Placement: The lightener is applied from the root all the way to the ends of the isolated strands. The foil traps heat, allowing the lightener to achieve a much higher level of lift and brightness.
✨ Foilayage (The Best of Both Worlds)
Foilayage combines the hand-painted placement of Balayage with the lifting power of foils.
-
Technique: The colorist uses the sweeping, strategic placement method of Balayage, painting V-shapes or W-shapes onto the hair strand. However, instead of leaving the painted hair open (like in true Balayage), they wrap the painted section in a foil.
-
Color Placement: Like Balayage, the color is typically placed off the root to maintain a soft grow-out.
